Contribute to a Circular Economy this Fall!
At its September 25 meeting, Dufferin County Council proclaimed October as Circular Economy Month in Dufferin!
A circular economy is an economic system that operates on reusing and recycling materials and products for as long as possible. This system helps keep items in
the cycle of production and consumption, so they don’t end up in landfill. A circular economy can also help conserve water, increase biodiversity and reduce GHG emissions, all contributing to a healthy climate.
How can you contribute to a circular economy in your household?
Contributing to a circular economy can be done by taking small actions that can make a big impact! Follow the tips below to get started.
Don’t toss it…Take it Back
Start by taking one or more items back to a business or organization for reuse, resale and/or proper disposal. Download the County’s Take It Back Directory to help you find a Take It Back location near you!
Work Towards Clothes’ing the Loop on Textiles
Do you have unwanted textiles, such as clothing, bed sheets and draperies piling up in your closets? Donate them to a business or organization near you! Use the Clothes’ing the Loop Map Tool to find a list of locations in Dufferin County.
Properly Dispose of Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste
Bring your old paint, motor oil, pesticides and more to the Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste event on Saturday, October 25 at the Orangeville Agricultural Society Event Centre from 8 am to 3 pm. Visit www.dufferincounty.ca/waste for a full list of acceptable items and limitations. This will be the final event of the year.
Close the Loop on Organics
Use your green bin to keep food waste out of landfill! Green bin material is taken to a composting facility where it is processed into compost, a nutrient-rich soil that helps plant and vegetables grow in your garden.
Already using your green bin? You can take a step further by diverting all organic waste from your garbage into your green bin, such as tissues, napkins and paper towel. Place extra kitchen containers in rooms where these types of organic waste are generated, such as the bathroom, living room and bedroom!
