Dufferin County’s Operations team is making the most of the clear, summer weather with upgrades, repairs and maintenance to ensure County roads are safe year-round.

This summer, County Operations crews are continuing work on the County’s Intersection Name Sign Replacement Program, which you may have already started to notice across the road network. Rather than installing standalone intersection name signs, the new signs are being mounted directly onto existing stop sign assemblies where appropriate.

This approach offers several benefits. By utilizing the existing stop sign post, the County can eliminate an additional post within the road allowance, reducing roadside clutter and potential roadside hazards. The new sign configuration also improves readability for motorists by placing key intersection information in a more visible location. Most importantly, positioning the intersection name sign directly on the stop sign posts helps draw additional attention to the intersection itself, increasing driver awareness and reinforcing the need to stop.

While it may seem like a small change, this project is another example of how thoughtful design improvements can enhance both safety and efficiency across our transportation network.

Every summer, County Operations crews refresh pavement markings across the road network. Line painting plays a critical role in road safety by providing clear visual guidance for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Over the winter months, snowplowing operations and everyday traffic can wear down pavement markings, reducing their visibility. Repainting these lines each summer helps improve driver awareness, particularly during nighttime and wet weather condition

Summer is the ideal time for shoulder maintenance activities. Crews grade and replenish shoulder gravel to improve drainage, support the edge of the pavement, and provide a safe recovery area for motorists who may need to pull off the road. Properly maintained shoulders help extend the life of our roads and reduce the potential for pavement edge deterioration, making them an important investment in both safety and infrastructure preservation.

Throughout the summer, our crews perform brushing operations along County roads to improve sightlines and enhance roadside safety. Removing excess vegetation helps motorists better see around curves and at intersections, improves the visibility of traffic signs, and ensures roadside infrastructure remains accessible for maintenance. Brushing also contributes to safer travel for all road users by maintaining clear and unobstructed road corridors.

Roadside grass mowing is another important summer maintenance activity. While it certainly improves the appearance of our roadsides, its primary purpose is safety. Regular mowing improves visibility at intersections, entrances, and along roadways while helping crews identify drainage issues and other maintenance concerns. Mowing schedules are carefully planned throughout the season to balance operational needs with environmental considerations where appropriate.

Not all road maintenance is immediately visible to the travelling public. During the summer months, Operations staff conduct retroreflectivity inspections and required replacements of road signs throughout the county. These inspections ensure that signs remain highly visible at night by measuring their reflective performance. Exposure to sunlight, weather, and age can significantly reduce a sign’s effectiveness over time. Identifying and replacing signs before they become a safety concern helps ensure motorists can quickly and clearly understand important roadway information, day or night.

​​​​​​​Guiderails are one of the most important roadside safety features found on County roads. During the summer construction season, crews inspect, repair, and replace damaged guiderails to ensure they remain capable of protecting motorists in the event of a collision. Whether shielding drivers from steep embankments, culverts, or other hazards, properly maintained guiderails help reduce the severity of roadway incidents and contribute to a safer transportation network.
